The cross is a strong symbol of the Christian faith. Christ's final steps to his crucifixion took him through the streets of Jerusalem carrying the cross on which he would die. Simon of Cyrene was forced to carry the cross when Jesus no longer could. To remember the depth of this sacrifice we will be carrying a cross through the streets of Minneapolis as part of Good Friday Worship. The Cross Walk is a moving experience and I welcome all of you to participate in this event. We will meet at the front door of the Music Box Theater at 5:30 PM. Our route will go along city streets and end back at the Music Box for Good Friday Worship at 8 PM. All participants will have a chance to carry the cross along the way. How you answer this question depends on you, and only you. No one can tell you what you are hungry for, it’s a primal feeling, so primal you sometimes don’t even know what you’re hungry for? The answer to the question is different based on your current state, do you have a physical hunger, emotional hunger, spiritual hunger? Which begs an additional question, how do you quench this hunger?

Power refers broadly to any ability to effect change or exert control over either things or people, subjects or objects. Power can be used for good or ill, and the opposite is true too, illustrated by the following poem by Martin Niemoller:

We often idolize people who portray themselves as Calm, Cool, and Collected. However, who are the people who have had the greatest impact on your life? For me these people had two out of the three; they were calm and collected, but they were much more caring then cool, in fact a lot of them were pretty uncool.

No where in the Bible does it lift up a person in a positive manner for being cool – but there are countless people lifted up for being caring. Isn’t that what all of this comes down to, being Calm, Caring, and Collected.

What does it mean to be genuine? Does it give us a free pass to trample on those around us while saying? “I’m just being who I am!”? There is a big difference between self-love and genuine love. Genuine love as Peter describes is a godly love for everyone. How do you know the difference?

April 19 - Self-love creates division. Genuine love lives in unity.
April 26 - Self-love establishes boundaries. Genuine love establishes peace.
May 3 - Self-love tolerates injustice of others. Genuine love seeks justice for all.
May 10 - Self-love holds power. Genuine love empowers others.
May 17 - Self-love lives for pleasure. Genuine love births joy.

I know some people who crave it. I’m personally the type of person who cringes when I hear the word. It might have something to do with my parents’ approaches to discipline me – but that’s another story.

For me, at its essences, discipline simply means to follow. We need to be disciplined in paying our bills, in taking care of ourselves physically, in time management, in Christian discipleship – discipline is in discipleship.

Heatherlyn (also called “HL”) is an emerging folk-rock artist from Minneapolis, MN with diverse sounds throughout her music. She will be providing music for worship this Sunday, while one of our own bands, 3 on the Tree, leads worship for the Welcome Ministry in San Francisco where Spirit Garage's former Seminary Student Jay Wilson will be ordained. Heatherlyn's honest and soulful voice conveys a message of hope that resonates with people of all backgrounds and generations. She believes art and music connect with people below the surface and can lead us into deeper, meaningful conversation about the change we can become in a world of uncertainty. Her hope is to inspire a vision of a world where peace and equity are commonplace, and to see people realize their own unique potential for positive transformation.
