Fantasy Football for Charity - Sign up by Mon. 9/6

Submitted by Rob on August 25, 2010 - 3:14pm.

Summer is drawing to an end and that can only mean one thing. Football season! Spirit in Action is pleased to announce the first annual Spirit Garage Fantasy Football League for Charity. We will be hosting an online Fantasy Football league with all money collected from entry fees being donated to the charity or non-profit of the winner’s choice. We are looking to have 12 entries with an entry fee of $10 per entry (but are more than willing to create another league if the interest is there).

For those people not familiar with Fantasy Football Leagues (FFLs), here is the jest of it. FFL is a game based on the actual performance of current players in the National Football League. A FFL player will pick his “fantasy” team by selecting a number of individual players from multiple teams in a draft format. Then, points are awarded each week according to how the individual players perform (number of touchdowns, passes completed, etc). The FFL players will play a different person from the fantasy league and wins and losses are recorded each. The best record and performance in the playoffs wins.

We will be playing this year through Yahoo.com and sign up is easy. There is no cost through Yahoo and sign up is free. We will be performing an AutoDraft on or around the first week in September so make sure you sign up soon. The entry fee can simply put in the offering baskets with “Fantasy Football” on the envelope or in the memo of your check, paid to Spirit Garage.

In order to join the league, contact our commissioner Bo Johnston.

Becoming a Good Samaritan (6-week small groups forming now) - Starts the week of September 12

Submitted by Rob on August 4, 2010 - 12:38pm.

Why become a Good Samaritan?

A World in crisis... besieged by Poverty, Pandemic Diseases, Social Injustice, Racism, Inequality and Political Oppression…

What impact could 77 million American Christians have on these problems? How different would our world be if the Church of Jesus Christ became the strongest voice on these issues? Why don’t more Christians get personally involved? It could be that we’ve become paralyzed by the enormity of the problem. Or worse, maybe we’ve become so caught up in our own busy, busy lives that our brain shuts out everything not on our “to do” list – including the Good Samaritan opportunities right in front of us!

Whatever the reason, when we’re faced with the reality of committing ourselves to being the hands and feet of Christ to a hurting world, we get stopped at the most critical point on the journey… the beginning! In six dynamic sessions, the “start> Becoming A Good Samaritan” DVD curriculum explores the critical needs facing our world and helps us understand how we can become Good Samaritans, right now, right where we live. It features an amazing line up of teachers, thinkers and leaders including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Eugene Peterson, Kay Warren, Rob Bell, Jim Cymbala, Gary Haugen, Jim Wallis, Mathew Sleeth, Philip Yancey, Rich Stearns, Shane Claiborne, Star Parker, Joni Eareckson Tada, Chuck Colson, Zach Hunter, Denver Moore, Ron Hall, and many others.

Join us in fully embracing the mission and spirit of our faith as we seek to obey Jesus’ command to “Go and do likewise” and become a Good Samaritan! Our goal is for everyone to participate. For questions or to sign up Contact: Amelia.
