Youth Band Leader and Confirmation Large Group Coordinator

Purpose:   Skilled musician with leadership skills to direct youth band (s) and coordinate curriculum with student leaders for Wed Night Confirmation Large Group

Status: 12 hours per week, Annual renewable contract

Relationships:

• Reports to Associate Pastor, Beth Warpmaeker
• Works with Senior High Director, Mandy Licklider Baseman

Responsibilities:

Youth Band Leader

General
Youth band (s) coordination, band development and band recruitment (incorporating the gifts of as many youth as possible).

Keep kids growing and staying interested in the band.

Weekly rehearsals with youth band.

Music Selection & Creating
Help find music and have knowledge of music resources.

Creative control over repertoire will be handled by leader and youth simultaneously.

Explore new music and not get in a rut, understanding that preferences/ genres of youth are most important.

Transcribe music when listening to it and adapt it to abilities.

Facilitate, encourage and nurture song writing among youth.

Band Interaction
Help members of band learn music, lead peers in singing, and help connect to music.

Be able to work and engage instrumentalists at all levels of expertise.

Transpose music into different keys. Know what key most people can sing in.

Be band leader and unifier. (Have presence not performer).

Proficient on your instrument and other instruments-know the lingo, talk the drummer talk, etc.

Encourage and support band members in musical abilities and in life in general.

Help students make connection to their music an expression of faith.

Grow band leadership into Sr. High ministry.

Confirmation Large Group Coordinator
Choose items from web-based curriculum to be used during large group time each week.

Coordinate leadership of Sr. High peer leaders for different parts of the large group time with Sr. High Director

Up front leadership and M.C. for large group time on Wednesdays (6:30 to 7:15 p.m.).

Work with audio/visual part of Wed. large group time (powerpoint, "stage" set up, sound)

Set the tone for the evening during large group time on Wednesday evenings

Teach or designate someone to teach Jr. High students songs and how to sing/ engage in music during large group time.

Proposed Weekly Schedule during the school year:
Weekly Rehearsal time (perhaps Mon or Tues. pm), set up and tear down-2 ½ hours

Weekly Check in time with Pastor Beth and Mandy-1 hour

Wednesday Large group and set up/ tear down time-2 hours

Large group program planning with power point using a curriculum-4 hours

Music preparation-1 ½ hours

Band development and connecting time/ communication-1 hour

Band Performance Schedule
Wednesday Night Performances during school year

Arranging for youth band(s) to play 2-3 Sundays a year on Sunday morning

Arranging for band to play at Vacation Bible School during the summer

Continuing Ed Opportunities
Youth Ministry Extravaganza or other

Qualifications/Experience:

• Strong personal faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to the ministry at Bethlehem.
• Musical abilities
• Band directing abilities
• Youth Leadership abilities
• Love of youth and the desire to help them grow in faith.
• Minimum of 3 years work experience in related field required.
• Ability to recruit and work with volunteers.
• Ability to take initiative and work without direct supervision.
• Work collaboratively with the youth, so they feel heard and respected.
• Ability to work effectively in a team ministry.
• Attention to detail and use of time.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications (Powerpoint, downloading music, etc.).
• Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.

Other Terms:
Willingness to work evenings and some weekends.
