Sci-Fi & Spirituality – Starting Sun. 2/11
Submitted by Admin2 on January 11, 2007 - 3:15pm.
Join us as we explore the first season of the new Battlestar Galactica and discuss the issues faith, morality, identity, and meaning which are major themes in the show. We will discuss how those themes relate to our own lives and faith starting by watching the entire 3 hour mini-series on Sunday Feb. 11, from 4-8 pm and then starting Feb. 18, we will gather on Sunday Evenings from 6-8 pm watching 1 episode per week.
We will meet in the cinema room on the 2nd floor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave S, Mpls. The cinema has theater seating for more than 30 people, LCD projector, DVD, and surround sound, so we’ll be able to see view the episodes in style. To sign up or to get more info, contact Ryan Torma at 651-238-8899.

• What did you like or not like about the episode?
• In the opening sequence the Cylon asks the Military Officer if he is alive and to prove it. How would you answer the question: Are you alive? How would you prove it?
• The Cylon with Dr. Baltar, Number 6, says she helped Baltar because God wanted her to help him. Do you think you can know the will of God, and if so how do you hear or understand God?
• In his speech, Adama talks about how humanity visits our sins on our children and that, “You cannot play god and wash your hands of the things you’ve created. Sooner or later the day comes when you can’t hide from the things you’ve done anymore.” Are there places where you have seen this in your own life or in our greater society?
• Did the President make the right decision in leaving the slower ships behind when the Cylons attacked? Why or why not?
• The Cylon on Ragnar Anchorage suggests that God thought humanity was a mistake and gave souls to the Cylons. In part of the Noah story in Genesis 6, God speaks of regretting creating humans. Do you think God still regrets making humans? What do you think a soul is? Do you think it is possible for animals, machines, or humans to have a soul? Why or why not?
• What did you notice about the ritual and prayer practices performed by the humans. How are they similar or different to your own practices?
• Adama says, “It is not enough just to live, you have to have something to live for.” Do you agree? What do you live for?
