SIA Orienteering - Afton State Park

Submitted by john6481 on April 17, 2006 - 1:23pm.

Spring is here and that also means the start of the orienteering season.  Orienteering is the skill of finding your way through a series of checkpoints on an unfamiliar course using a map and a compass. Typically a course is set in a wilderness area and the participants are timed as they complete it.

Orienteering challenges both mind and body. The key to orienteering is more the ability to make wise decisions rather than the ability to run like a deer. Hence the name "The Thinking Sport". Out in the woods, you must make decisions and calculations; reading the map, recognizing the terrain, choosing routes, setting the compass, and sometimes counting paces. This mental challenge makes orienteering consistently stimulating.

This event is put on by the Minnesota Orienting Club and will be held at Afton STate Park.

Note: There is an entrance fee for vehicles entering the park.

Directions: Afton State Park is located on the St. Croix river (Minnesota side) between the cities of Afton and Hastings. From 94, exit Manning Ave. Take Manning South about 7 miles to 70th St. Take 70th to the East and you will enter the park.

Hey Gang...  Obviously the weather isn't all that great for tomorrow.  I will probably check the weather in the Afton State Park area around 10ish and make another posting regarding the race.  I am up for the event as long as it isn't pouring and like 40 degrees out.  That wouldn't be fun.  Anyway, stay tune to another post or else you can call myself or Tom Hattlestad around 11 for more info.

If the weather is nice, we will probably plan on meeting at the park as a group for a 1:00 start.

Let's just pray for some nice weather.  Talk to you later,

Bo Johnston

OK, sorry to do this to you on such short notice but we are changing the event from Orienteering to Community Service.  Melissa is currently planning a volunteer remodeling project at the Oak Park Neighborhood Center in NE Minneapolis.  That event is going to be next Saturday but we are going to get a jump start on the the event by constructing coat hangers, cubby holes, and shelving units for the preschool and after school programs.  A link to the United Way site is listed below. This will be a fun "indoor" activity as it will be in our garage.
