v1
A man lies dying in the street
Forgotten when newspaper ink has dried
Will he become just another number
or ever be remembered?
Did he go out that day looking for trouble
was he taken by a moment of madness
seduced by a quick score to feed a habit
How did he fall so far so needlessly

c
Needlessly...
Was he that different from you and me
Needlessly...
He was no differnet than you and me.

v2
Another dies near a restaurant
It becomes six o'clock headline news
A neighborhood reacts in shock and anger
will it ever pass from their minds
His mother's screams pierced the cold night air
And he clung to life before he slipped away
The mourners share their disbelief together
Why did he fall so far so needlessly

c
Needlessly...
Was he that different from you and me
Needlessly...
He was no different than you and me.

v3
Were they a brother, maybe a father
or a roommate living in Uptown
Why did one pass so unnoticed
as the other became widely known
When the tragedies fade for the city
Thier families have to face each passing day
and try to piece their lives together
For them it will never be the same

Needlessly...
Were thay that different from you and me
Needlessly...
They were no differnet than you and me.
