Self-employment and faith

Changes in life seem to be constant.  One of the changes I am undertaking right now is becoming an independent contractor.  For those of you in the community who are already self-employed, or know someone who is, what words of wisdom can you offer to balance your faith, your business, and the rest of your life?  I am also thinking about forming a small group that would meet once a month for Bible study and conversation surrounding self-employment.  Would anyone be interested? Did you or anyone else read the recent articles in the Strib about the metro banks that are using Jesus, at the workplace, in various ways? These banks are small local banks and they have faith integrated in interesting ways. Some that I like and some that I loathe. If you haven't read them it may be of interest to those interested in this thread. I would love to hear what you all think. Peace

Yes, I did check out the article in the Trib.  I like the idea of employers looking at this, but I also get concerned when they make everything too general.  I worked for one of the big retailers here in Minneapolis and they encouraged us to say Happy Holidays, but almost frowned upon people acutally saying somehting that reflected their faith like Merry Christmas or Happy Hannukah.

In my new job, I will be able to bring my faith to work and use it with my clients, which will be great.  penahaha, are you able to display your faith at work?  In what capacity?

I always get opportunities to let people know that I am a Christian. I'm a public school teacher. Because of the nature of my classes, I always get questions about my faith. For instance, when we discuss the Scientific Method and Evolution, or Bio Ethics, I am asked how I juxtopose my faith and being a scientist. These questions inevitably lead to students exploring other's beliefs as I teach in the city of Minneapolis where it is becoming more and more common to have students that come from a variety of faiths. It is very enriching to let students talk about their upbringing through their faiths. Muslims, various Christians, Philosophical Anarchists, Atheists, Agnostics, Native Americans, Pagans of all types, Jews, etc., are parts of our community. Being sensitive to the variety of faiths, I do wish kids happy holiday vacations and specific merry Christmas, Ramadan, and Hannaka to their respective followers. I admit that I chose not to wear my ashes to school last Weds because I felt a little intimidating to other adults here last ash Wednesday (2005). Peace
