Theology Pub chats about sports, athletic discipline, and God

Submitted by Sean Killackey on February 7, 2006 - 5:39pm.

Kristin Kuehl has volunteered to host a pub discussion at her place this Friday, and has a terrific idea for a topic. Kris is an Olympic hopeful training in discus throwing, and has dedicated a lot of her energy to developing her God-given athletic talent. Do you like to compete or play sports? Do you like to watch the Olympics?  Just want to talk about the Superbowl?  Or not?

What:
Theology Pub about sports, athletic training, and God In Kris' words:

Friday is the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and think it would be interesting to talk about what God thinks about sports and their outcomes.  I've always kinda struggled with that issue myself, especially when I was training.  For instance... is my performance already etched into God's grand plan or am I in total control of what happens on the field.  Can prayer actually affect a sporting outcome?  Does God even give a rip about who throws a discus farther or who wins a football game?  Or is it a combination of many things... Of course, there's no way to know except to die and ask God at that time.  But I think it would be an interesting topic since there will be two major sporting events (Superbowl and Olympics) taking place in early February.
