How to get html tags to work, or... how do I put a line break in my post?

Um, so I finally figured it out. I was going nuts trying to include some of the tags that are listed below as "Allowed HTML tags" but they just keep showing up in my document as body text without really being used by the page to format my post. I just wanted to put a break in to separate a couple of lines from the rest of the post.

Like that.

If you want to use HTML tags, you have to disable rich text by clicking disable rich text below here. Otherwise the WYSIWYG editor just makes your tags into body text that show up in your post. Like this <br> <p> </p>

So it isn't a question of safari, opera, or firefox (or even what you like for breakfast), but whether you want to use the rich text editing abilities, or whether you want to use tags.  And you have to use <p></p> to put a line break in :-)

Did you do something specifically to get your body text to do bold out like it did or is something funky going on w/ our text editor?

I don't think I understand your question.  What do you mean by "bold out"?  I forget, but I may have changed the body text in my post to a heading 3 level with the html tag <h3>.  Try that and see if that is what you meant.
