"What’s at Your Core?" Sunday Message Series: Sept. 27 - Oct. 25

There are a number of behavioral tests and other things that try to help us understand who we are – Myers-Brigs, Clifton Strength-Finder, Enneagram, some people turn to astrology, birth order, etc; it’s endless. Regardless of how something classifies you, ultimately it comes down to how you live out your life – that is "What is at your Core?"

Over the next 5 weeks as we look at Spirit Garage Core Values, hopefully it will help each of us understand our own. In the end we hope you write, rewrite, or reclaim your own mission statement and the values you live out because who God made you to be.

Spirit Garage Mission Statement - By the same grace that Jesus has given you, seek to love God with all of your spirit, mind and body and to share God's love with all people.

September 27: Big Door - Servicing all makes and models—shiny and new, rusty and broken.

October 4: Authentic Relationships - Real life, real help. Get it. Give it. Live it.

October 11: God Gifted - God has given everyone gifts to use for the benefit of the community and the world.

October 18: Compassionate Community - God calls us into community to live out the love of Christ.

October 25: Grassroots Ministry - With God, we all get a chance to be involved.

I can't really think of a good mission statement for myself. I've been reading a lot of books lately about voluntarism and community service for ideas of how I can get involved. I came across this little paragraph that really inspired me and sounds a lot like a mission statement that I'd like to adopt. It's credited to a volunteer by the name of Cliff Landesman.

"One of my lifetime goals is to be as generous as I can be. I am not the most brilliant thinker in the world, so I am not going to push forward the frontiers of human knowledge. Nor am I especially ambitious in my career, so I am not going to be the CEO of the next Google. However, I do have moral ambition. I would like to stretch myself to be the most generous person I can be. I think that is in my power. Even if I fail, it can't hurt to try."

James and I created this Mission/Vision statement for our home not long after we married and were building a stepfamily:  "It is our desire and intention to provide a safe, harmonious environment for everyone living in and/or visiting our home, based upon the philosophy that if you create a good environment harmony will follow."

A couple years later we found a Chinese Proverb which we added to our vision board:  "If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home.  If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation.  If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world."

It starts at home.  It starts with yourself.  To spread peace thoughout the world, we first need peace in ourselves and in our home.  The rest just follows naturally.
